Today I round out my Wahls-inspired series on the health benefits of eating various classes of plant matter. If you’re just now joining us, be sure to watch the video in which Terry Wahls explains how eating a Paleo diet rich in leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, and brightly colored produce (plus meat and seaweed and fish and offal) coincided with a regression in her rapidly-progressing MS. Then, read the previous two installments on leafy greens and crucifers to get completely caught up.

All ready? Good.click here to read more

Grocery Store Seafood: What to Eat and What to Avoid
In the comment section of last week’s post on farmed seafood, readers asked about the safety of regular, everyday seafood that you can find in any supermarket in the country – the popular, easily obtainable species that conventional supermarkets proudly display on ice, in frozen sections, and in cans and packets. Not crayfish, New Zealand green lipped mussels, and boutique tank raised Coho salmon, but tilapia, cod, and crab. They may not be ideal or as sexy as some of the species from last week, but they are common.

So – what’s common? To make this as objective and universal as possible, I’ll examine the ten most common seafoods consumed by Americans. As of 2009, they were, from most eaten to least eaten: shrimp, canned tuna, salmon, pollock, tilapia, catfish, crab, cod, clams, and pangasius. Shrimp I’ll cover in depth next week, catfish and clams were handled last week, and I covered farmed versus wild salmon a couple years ago, but what about the others? Which are worth eating? Which should be avoided?

Let’s take a look.to read more click here

How to Fuel a Marathon
Having yielded to those of you who still insist on running a marathon, yesterday I offered a training strategy that gets you the best results with the least amount of damage. Today’s post is about fueling a marathon – what food to eat and when to eat it. It’s not solely about race day nutrition, because if you just focused on what to eat the day of the race, you’d be missing out on a lot (and you’d likely have problems finishing, or at the very least your performance would suffer). It’s about what to eat while training, a few days before the race, and the day of the race itself. This is the stuff I would do if I had to go back and do another marathon with my current knowledge. I might tweak things slightly if I was trying to make the Olympics, but for the average, relatively fit Primal dude or gal who wants to check this off their bucket list? This is the perfect way to fuel your efforts. And this works equally as well for those of you who think a century ride (100 miles on a bike) might be in the cards.to read more click here

Why You Should Eat Leafy Greens
By now, you’ve probably seen the TedX video from Dr. Terry Wahls, a former Tae Kwon Do champ and current MD diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (the kind that degenerates your brain and has you relying on a wheelchair to get around) who describes her transformative experience with a dairy-free Paleo diet rich in fruits, vegetables, grass-fed meat and organs, and seaweed. Relegated to and totally dependent on a wheelchair in 2007, by 2008 Wahls had adopted the diet and was commuting to work on a bicycle and now incorporates this kind of intensive directed nutrition into her primary care and brain injury clinics. If you haven’t, go ahead and take twenty minutes out of your day to go watch it. It’s a real eye-opener (but not all that surprising to longtime readers). Think of it as a grass-fed, wild-caught success story.to read more click here

Hydrochloric acid presents a few dilemmas for those of us seeking better supplements on a daily basis. On one hand, it must be handled with appropriate safety precautions because it is a highly corrosive substance. It is used in various industrial applications including leather manufacturing and PVC plastic production, as well as the removal of rust from iron and steel.1 Of course another great use for hydrochloric acid, or HCL, is to help us digest our food. to read more click here

The Western World is finally starting to recognize the many therapeutic uses of fish oil. This is good news – and what’s more, it’s about time. Fish oil is one of the most important supplements you can take, with an impressive list of benefits: from improving cardiovascular health to helping you lose weight. The problem is that many of the fish oil products on the market are simply not very good. To know why, simply follow the money: To get the maximum profit from fish oil supplements, many manufacturers compromise on quality. Let’s talk about thisclick here to read more

It is important to ask tough questions when looking for the best multivitamin for you.

First, consider the ingredients. Here’s a nightmare scenario.

What if you were a typical, large, unscrupulous supplement manufacturer and you decided to make a multivitamin/mineral (MVM) to be sold in a mass merchant like the local grocery store or major nutrition center? How would you decide what to use in your MVM? How would you compete in this market where the corporate buyers aren’t interested in health; they’re all about the bottom line?click here to read more

According to the American College of Gastroenterology, over 95 million Americans suffer from some kind of digestive problem. These problems may range from indigestion and GERD, to diarrhea, constipation, IBS, and inflammatory bowel diseases like colitis or Crohn’s. One often neglected area in the world of gut health is the importance of prebiotics. Most people have heard about probiotics, good bacteria strains that have been shown in research to have a positive effect on health, but much less discussed is the importance of feeding these good bacteria with prebiotics. Prebiotics are essentially the food or fertilizer that feed the good bacteria in our intestinal tract, increasing<del></del> their growth and proliferation, positively influencing gut health. Prebiotics, when provided in a comprehensive gut health formula, have a profound influence on gut ecology and health and have been gaining more and more research attention in recent years. Now available in the Poliquin store is Uber Prebiotic.click here to read more
